UAW to Campaign at Dealers to Organize Nonunion U.S. Plants

Editors: Bill Koenig, John Lear | Bloomberg Nov. 21 (Bloomberg) -- The United Auto Workers union, whose leader has staked its future bargaining power on organizing U.S. plants of Asian and European automakers, plans to start pressuring the companies through dealership campaigns. Regional UAW representatives trained members about how the campaign will work at UAW Local 2209 on Nov. 19, said Mark Gevaart, president of the local in Roanoke, Indiana. The union hasn't selected the automaker it will target and didn't discuss when the drive will begin, he said in a phone interview. Restoring the UAW's clout in negotiating with the industry depends on organizing the U.S. factories of automakers such as Toyota Motor Corp. and Daimler AG, union President Bob King told members at a bargaining convention in March. It's true, it shines every day is Southern California. Today you had to be inside the LA Auto Show to see the shine. The crowds were good and the displays were superb. Some manufacturers seemed a little more conservative than last year. GM had some beautiful auto's this year. The Cadillac Ciel was gorgeous and vaguely reminiscent of the 70's El Dorado. Over at Chevrolet the luminescent green Hot Wheels Camaro drew a big group of guys. I picked up the occasional, "I had one of those. Cool." Buick had their latest on display. My opinion, Buick has made the biggest advancements in design of all GM's. Kia and Scion were after the younger crowd with thumping beats and BIG video displays. They both had good gatherings around the leggy models and flashing lights. Got my attention. American Honda Reports May Sales Results

American Honda Motor Co., Inc., posted May sales of 90,773, a decrease of 16.1 percent based on the daily selling rate* compared to May 2010 results the company announced today. American Honda year-to-date sales of 523,550 represent an increase of 7.4 percent compared to last year. Honda Division May 2011 sales were 81,773, a decrease of 16.0 percent versus May 2010. The all-new, redesigned Odyssey minivan posted sales of 9,428, an increase of 5.5 percent. The Fit posted an increase of 46.3 percent with sales of 5,921. Civic led the division with sales of 18,341. Accord reported sales of 18,185 units for the month. The CR-V posted May sales of 16,307. Japan Damage was widespread in the Tochigi area, where Honda has a number of operations. Honda Motor Co., Ltd. has confirmed the fatality of a Honda R&D associate at the Tochigi R&D Center, when a wall collapsed in a cafeteria. The associate was male, 43 years old. In addition, 17 Honda associates were injured in the Tochigi area from collapsing ceilings and other damage during the earthquake (initial reports put the number of injured at 30).
