American Honda Motor Co., Inc., posted May sales of 90,773, a decrease of 16.1 percent based on the daily selling rate* compared to May 2010 results the company announced today. American Honda year-to-date sales of 523,550 represent an increase of 7.4 percent compared to last year. Honda Division May 2011 sales were 81,773, a decrease of 16.0 percent versus May 2010. The all-new, redesigned Odyssey minivan posted sales of 9,428, an increase of 5.5 percent. The Fit posted an increase of 46.3 percent with sales of 5,921. Civic led the division with sales of 18,341. Accord reported sales of 18,185 units for the month. The CR-V posted May sales of 16,307. For the sixth consecutive year, Honda will power the full 33-car starting field in Sunday's Indianapolis 500, the 100th anniversary running of the Memorial Day classic. Honda has supplied racing engines to the full 33-car Indianapolis 500 field every year since 2006, and for a record five consecutive years – and the only five times in Indianapolis 500 history – there has not been a single engine failure in the '500'. Japan Damage was widespread in the Tochigi area, where Honda has a number of operations. Honda Motor Co., Ltd. has confirmed the fatality of a Honda R&D associate at the Tochigi R&D Center, when a wall collapsed in a cafeteria. The associate was male, 43 years old. In addition, 17 Honda associates were injured in the Tochigi area from collapsing ceilings and other damage during the earthquake (initial reports put the number of injured at 30).
