Editors: Bill Koenig, John Lear | Bloomberg Nov. 21 (Bloomberg) -- The United Auto Workers union, whose leader has staked its future bargaining power on organizing U.S. plants of Asian and European automakers, plans to start pressuring the companies through dealership campaigns. Regional UAW representatives trained members about how the campaign will work at UAW Local 2209 on Nov. 19, said Mark Gevaart, president of the local in Roanoke, Indiana. The union hasn't selected the automaker it will target and didn't discuss when the drive will begin, he said in a phone interview. Restoring the UAW's clout in negotiating with the industry depends on organizing the U.S. factories of automakers such as Toyota Motor Corp. and Daimler AG, union President Bob King told members at a bargaining convention in March. The UAW has failed in past attempts to organize Toyota, Honda Motor Co. and … [Read more...]

Los Angeles Auto Show 2011

Audi eTron Spyder

It's true, it shines every day is Southern California. Today you had to be inside the LA Auto Show to see the shine. The crowds were good and the displays were superb. Some manufacturers seemed a little more conservative than last year. GM had some beautiful auto's this year. The Cadillac Ciel was gorgeous and vaguely reminiscent of the 70's El Dorado. Over at Chevrolet the luminescent green Hot Wheels Camaro drew a big group of guys. I picked up the occasional, "I had one of those. Cool." Buick had their latest on display. My opinion, Buick has made the biggest advancements in design of all GM's. Kia and Scion were after the younger crowd with thumping beats and BIG video displays. They both had good gatherings around the leggy models and flashing lights. Got my attention. Toyota, Honda and Nissan were there in full regalia and the electrics were getting a lot of attention. … [Read more...]

The Nissan Ad (Finally) Gets the Pitch Right

Nissan Leaf Ad

8:16 AM Tuesday June 14, 2011 Andrew Winston wrote this interesting article from Harvard Business Review. As a car, the all-electric Nissan Leaf has received mostly great reviews. But as a positioning statement, Nissan has, in many marketers' eyes, missed the boat. After some missteps, Nissan may now be on the right path. An ad I pulled from Fast Company recently hits all the right marks. The debate — or more accurately criticism — began last year with a now infamous ad showing a polar bear lugging himself from the Arctic to some guy's suburban driveway to hug him for buying a Leaf. The ad was gorgeous, no doubt, and the YouTube version has been viewed 1.3 million times, which isn't bad. But some green marketing leaders, such as Jacquie Ottman, found it a bit heavy-handed and way too focused on the hyper-green benefits vs. driving experience. But even before getting to … [Read more...]
