After Notes…..

Steve Lawrence

I just spent four days at SEMA 2011 in Las Vegas. I'd like to finish the week with a few observations. The people that put the SEMA show together are the best I've ever seen. I never observed anyone that was remotely upset about anything. The staff were great and the people were great. I stood in line a few times at the Starbucks. The lines were long, 30 to 45 minutes long. That says something about Starbucks and even more about the people in line with me. No grumbling, just casual conversation. Las Vegas...a town I haven't been to since a motorcycle rally in '03. Good times then and good times now. I live in Southern California now, I may be a little jaded, but people in Las Vegas smoke. They smoke everywhere. I love it. Second hand smoke is the sweet smell of freedom. … [Read more...]

SEMA 2011- BASF Mercedes-Benz 300 SL by Foose Design

Foose Design BASF 300 SL

The Mercedes 300 SL Gullwing has been an icon for high performance sports cars since the day it hit the track. Customizing these icons is a tricky business. Ruin the original casché and the public eats you alive. Chip Foose is a professional and I've never seen a miss step from him. Foose Design hits a home run with this one. Foose Design tackled this project on behalf of BASF Corporation. This iconic classic underwent a very subtle transformation to bring it into the 21st century. The most obvious is the paint. The paint, supplied by BASF of course, is charcoal silver for the upper and bright silver for the inset separated by an interior matching red accent line. … [Read more...]

Karl Kustom Corvettes

SEMA 2011 Karl Kustom Corvettes

Jim Hidy of Karl Kustom Corvettes is the consumate car customizer/builder. The enthusiasm he has for his product is amazing. When you walk up to this 1963 Split window Corvette coupe, your first reaction is "Wow, that's the way they should have been." I remember a trip to Davis-Child, the local Chevy dealer in Hutchinson, Ks. The word got around fast in a small town and there was a new Corvette on the showroom floor. Jim and the guys at Karl Kustom Corvettes have blended the gorgeous lines of the '63 with the running gear of the 2011. All factory warranties are in effect. The interior has been retro'ed to have the look of 1963 with the functionality on a 2011. The fit and finish out shines the original. This car is already sold but you can get the next one by calling Jim Hidy at 515.802.7071 or email him at J.Hidy@KarlChevrolet.com. More info at … [Read more...]

SEMA 2011 Check-In

SEMA 2011 Ford Crew Cab

This is my first year at SEMA and to really make it great, I got a media pass. Kathie and I drove to Los Vegas today, about 300 miles, so I could report the latest in the after market world. This place is huge and as we walked through the vendors putting the finishing touches on their displays, the thing that just blows me away, is the quality of their work. As the big boys say, "Please stay tuned for more." Check out the tail gate on this Ford. … [Read more...]
